Refund to Shopify Store Credit

Last Updated: September 23, 2026

Refund to Shopify Store Credit is a return resolution that refunds customers with Shopify's native store credit.

The credit is added to the customer's store credit balance on their Shopify customer account. Customers can then use their balance as a payment method at checkout.

This feature is currently in beta and not yet available to all merchants. Apply to join the beta.

Capabilities

The Shopify store credit resolution enables you to:

  • Refund customers with store credit that is saved to their Shopify customer account.
  • Refund your customers while keeping the revenue in your store.
  • Incentivize customers beyond the original payment amount for choosing this resolution.
  • Let customers use their credit as a payment method at checkout when they are signed in.

Issuing Shopify Store Credit

When ReturnGO issues Shopify store credit:

  • The amount is added to the customer's Shopify store credit balance. No discount code is created.
  • The refunded amount is documented on the RMA page.
  • The balance and transaction history are visible on the customer's profile in Shopify Admin.

Customers can use their credit when they are signed in to their Shopify customer account or checking out with Shop Pay.

Shopify store credit is rechargeable. If credit is issued to the same customer more than once, their balance increases with each new credit.

Requirements and Limitations

The refund to shopify store credit feature has requirements and limitations:

  • Available for Shopify stores only.
  • Coupon-code store credit balances and Shopify store credit balances are separate. Enabling this resolution does not move existing coupon-code balances to customer accounts.
  • Your store must use Shopify's new customer accounts. Native store credit is not available with legacy customer accounts.
  • Store credit must be turned on as a payment method in Shopify Admin > Settings > Customer accounts.
  • Customers must be signed in or use Shop Pay at checkout. Guest checkout with only an email address does not apply store credit.

Configuring Refund to Shopify Store Credit

To configure refunds to Shopify store credit:

  1. Go to Settings > Resolutions.
  2. Open the Return Resolutions section.
  3. Click CREDITS: ACCOUNT STORE CREDIT or create a new resolution with this type.
  4. Set the internal name for the resolution.
  5. Set the refund type to Credits: Account store credit.
  6. Set the amount you want to offer the customer, relative to the paid price. You can use this to incentivize customers to choose this refund type.
  7. Click on the save icon to save your changes.

Note: After the resolution is enabled, approve the latest ReturnGO app permissions if Shopify asks you to. ReturnGO needs permission to write store credit.

Enabling the resolution does not add it to your return portal. Add the resolution to your Return Policy rules so customers can choose it.

Tip: You can customize how this refund method appears in your portal in Settings > Portal > Content, under the refund methods for credits: account store credit.

Setting the Validity Period of Shopify Store Credit

Shopify store credit uses the same expiration settings as coupon-code store credit.

To set the validity period of Shopify store credit:

  1. Go to Settings > General.
  2. Open the Refund Alternatives section.
  3. In the return credits expiration section, set how long customers have to use their credit, or set it to never expire.
  4. Click on the save icon to save your changes.

The expiration period starts from the date ReturnGO issues the credit.

Viewing and Managing Shopify Store Credit

You can view Shopify store credit in two places:

  1. In Shopify, go to Customers, open the customer's profile, and view the Store credit section. This shows the live balance, transactions, and expiration dates.
  2. In ReturnGO, issued amounts appear in the Timeline section of the relevant RMA.

To add or remove Shopify store credit outside of a return, use Shopify's customer store credit tools. You cannot adjust Shopify store credit from Analytics > Credits.
